Scotlands winter mountains are a unique environment, a heady mix of pleasure and pain. It's no surprise that winter mountaineering and climbing in Scotland is internationally famous. 'Storm lashed or frost bound*', no two days are likely to yield the same winter experience.

This winter James Thacker Mountaineering will be offering the full range of winter skills, mountaineering and climbing courses, from first your first steps in crampons through to the classic ice and mixed routes on Ben Nevis and the Cairngorms. Use the menu on the left to browse your area(s) of interest.

Most Scottish winter mountaineering, skills and climbing courses are based in the town of Fort William close to the major mountain areas of Ben Nevis, Aonach Mor, Glen Coe and the Mamores. This region holds some of the most famous winter mountaineering and climbing in Scotland and is also within travelling distance of the North West Highlands and the Cairngorms.

Intermediate or experienced hill walker? You may want to visit the Winter Mountaineering section for details about various courses for independant hill walkers and mountaineers who would like to negociate steeper and more exposed ground e.g. classic winter ridges etc.
