We believe that climbing is about exhilaration, adventure and visiting some great places. As such James Thacker Mountaineering offers some adventurous rock climbing trips to some of the more wild and remote parts of the UK, such as: The Old Man of Stoer, Old Man of Hoy, Skye and the Inaccessible Pinnacle.

These are constantly being updated. If you have an idea for a great trip then please contact us. Please note that the duration of these trips is not fixed allowing you to decide on one, (or more) trips of your choice. Your climbing adventure, should afterall be as unique as you are.

Classic/Hard Rock:

There is a fantastic variety of high quality climbing around Britain of all standards, this being captured in Ken Wilson's landmark coffee table books 'Classic Rock' and 'Hard Rock'. Many people aspire to 'tick' off these classic routes around the country; if you have a 'Classic' or 'Hard Rock' tick in mind perhaps we can make it a reality.

Stack Attacks:

The Scottish Sea Stacks offer a unique climbing challenge, which provides an unusual, and exhilarating experience. The Northern Highlands of Scotland have a vast number of Sea Stacks, the most popular being The Old Man of Stoer, Old Man of Hoy and Am Buchaille.

  • Old Man of Stoer: "The most impressive sea-stack on the North West coast of Scotland" (SMC Northern Highlands Guide). The Original Route to the summit of the stack is a classic VS which offers some fantastic climbing making it a highly prized 'tick'. In order to reach the base of the stack a swim and tyrolean is required before making the climb to the summit.
  • Old Man of Hoy: The Old Man of Hoy is perhaps one of the best known Scottish sea stacks following the televised ascent by Sir Chris Bonington and his team in the summer of 1967. The original route to the summit is a long and elegant climb of E1 standard.

Our Stack Attacks are undertaken on a guided basis of 1:2 max. For the Old Man of Stoer you should have experience of climbing routes at 'Severe' standard. For the Old Man of Hoy you should have some experience of climbing at HVS standard. It should be noted that in both cases enthusiasm combined with a thirst for adventure is more important than technical ability. Please feel free to discuss your experience if you have any doubts. For more pictures of the Old Man of Stoer and Old Man of Hoy please visit our Gallery.

Please feel free to discuss your aims and experience if you have any doubts. For more pictures of Scottish Islands visit our Gallery.
